Lt Colonel Leonard Smith MBE TD

To all association members
It is with great sadness that I have to announce the of Lieutenant Colonel Len Smith MBE. His service with the 2nd Battalion Mercian Volunteers was characterised by his infectious enthusiasm and he always had a bright smile and a cheery manner for everyone with whom he served. In his later years he was Deputy Commandant of his local army cadet force  in the Aberystwyth area. He was a great friend of the association and supported our Eagle Dining club regularly. He will be sadly missed.

Len was a good CSM and friend while I served at A Company 2 Mercian with him.
Please pass on my wishes to Bronwin,Paul and Jenny.

I have the sad news that Colour Sergeant Reg Bailey passed away on Monday 16th May.
Reg was called up for national service in 1952 where in true Mercian Brigade tradition he was first capped as a Cheshire and then served in Worcester's in Germany. On leaving the army Reg joined the B company, 5/6 North Stafford's at Rugeley. Reg was then promoted to colour sergeant at the company head quarters at Burton upon Trent. In 1967 Reg was the first colour sgt for C company Mercian volunteers. Reg retired from the regiment after 17 years TA service.
Reg was always involved with Worcester's regimental association, the Stafford's and one of the founder members of the Rugeley branch of the Mercian Volunteers regimental association. He was also an active supporter of Brereton and Rugeley Royal British Legions.
